Lore & Background

The planet's significance was revitalized following the death of the Overmind on Aiur at the end of the original StarCraft campaign and the subsequent rise of the Zerg Queen, Sarah Kerrigan. Recognizing the need to preserve the genetic purity of her race away from the corruption of Amon or the interference of other factions, Kerrigan visited Zerus during the events of Heart of the Swarm to absorb the primal Zerg essence, but she did not establish a sovereign presence there. The world became a sanctuary for the primal Zerg and the genetic essence of the Swarm, though the Broodmothers—key figures in Zerg reproduction and strategy—were originally created by the Overmind, not Kerrigan, though Kerrigan later created new Broodmothers like Zagara after the Overmind's death. While major conflicts against the Dark Templar occurred primarily on Shakuras, the Dark Templar eventually allied with Kerrigan on Char, not Shakuras. Zerus remained a critical stronghold focused on genetic preservation and preparation for the ultimate enemy, the Xel'Naga entity Amon.
