The planet's dense crust provided ideal conditions for the construction of massive subterranean hives, allowing the Swarm to launch surprise attacks on nearby human colonies with devastating speed. The occupation of Gahns was marked by fierce resistance from Terran colonial militias who attempted to hold the line against the encroaching hive. These conflicts were brutal and often one-sided, serving as a grim tutorial for both sides: the Zerg learned to adapt their bio-forms specifically to counter human weaponry, while the Terrans realized that conventional warfare was insufficient against an enemy that could evolve in real-time.
