The UED invasion was driven by the discovery of alien life in the Koprulu Sector. The United Earth Directorate, Earth's international governing body, dispatched an expeditionary force to secure the sector and prevent aliens from finding Earth. Their strategic plan involved toppling Arcturus Mengsk's Terran Dominion. Early in the campaign, the player assumes the role of a UED adjutant/commander reporting to DuGalle and Stukov. The fleet discovered a 'psi disrupter' on Braxis, a device capable of disrupting Zerg communications. While Duran convinced Admiral DuGalle to destroy it, Stukov's forces intervened at the last moment to preserve the device. The conflict shifted when the UED tracked Mengsk and Jim Raynor to Char, where they attempted to capture the Zerg Overmind. There, Duran's betrayal began to surface, and Stukov grew suspicious of his actions. Stukov realized Duran was undermining the UED, but the Zerg were not formally allied with the Dominion or Protoss—Kerrigan manipulated all sides to her advantage. While Stukov took a contingent to reconstruct the psi disrupter on Braxis, DuGalle, unaware of these intentions, became convinced Stukov was a traitor. The player then assisted Duran in hunting down Stukov inside the psi disrupter. Before dying, Stukov revealed to DuGalle that Duran was the true enemy, leading Duran to flee after his sabotage attempt was foiled.

In Their Own Story

The UED forces initially found success on Korhal IV, defeating Arcturus Mengsk's armies before he was rescued by a Protoss fleet commanded by Jim Raynor. The player led the UED incursions against the Dominion, eventually tracking Raynor and Mengsk to Aiur. However, the operation collapsed when Samir Duran moved his forces out of position, allowing Zerg interference that let the targets escape. Stukov deduced that Duran's actions were not a coincidence but part of a larger conspiracy where the Zerg had allied with the Dominion and Protoss to counter the UED. While Stukov worked on Braxis to rebuild the psi disrupter, DuGalle, misled by Duran's deceptions, turned against his vice-admiral. The player was forced to hunt Stukov down inside the facility. In a final confrontation, Stukov revealed Duran's treachery before dying, but Duran escaped when the player foiled his attempt to destroy the psi disrupter. With the device operational, DuGalle and the UED assaulted Char, taking control of a new Overmind growing there. This victory was short-lived as Sarah Kerrigan, now controlling the Zerg Swarm, formed a reluctant alliance with Raynor, Mengsk, and Protoss Praetor Fenix to destroy the psi disrupter. Once the device fell, Kerrigan led her forces in a full-scale assault on Korhal, breaking the UED's hold over the planet. In the aftermath, Kerrigan betrayed her allies, killing Fenix and Edmund Duke.
